One of the most impressive castles on the Rhone, sited on a rocky outcrop over the river. It was restored in 1825.

Rüdesheim
Germania taken from the Seilbahn above Rüdesheim

This National Monument standards 225m above the Rhine. The foundation stone was laid in 1877 to commemorate the reformation of the German Empire. The monument is 38m high, the statue itself is 11.3m.

Wine Terraces and the River

This large expanse of vines on the hillside above Rüdesheim is reputed to have been planted by Charlemagne. These vines produce Rüdesheimer Rosencavalier, the only red wine producecd in the Rhine Valley.

On a very hot day, the ride in the Seilbahn produced a rather nice cool breeze. It was probably the most comfortable 20 minutes of the day.

Rhine Park and Cathedral

Cologne Cathedral symbolises the glory of the Rhineland. Building was started in 1428 but not completed until 1880. It is the biggest pure Gothic building North of the Alps. The height of the towers is 470'. The cathedral has many notable statues, exceptional stained glass windows and precious valuables in the treasury.

The Germanic tribe Urbii founded the sity of Cologne. Later it became the important Roman town Colinia Agrippinensis, shorted to Colonia by the 5th century. In the middle ages, oit was a powerful member of the Hanseatic League, a great trading centre and together with Mainz the ecclesiastical centre of the whole of Germany. As one of the trading centres it rapidly achieved commercial prominance and is today a vital centre of traffic and communications for North West Germany.
