The start of our three day Cosmos holiday to the Rhine Valley. We crossed the channel to Ostende. The seagulls followed the boat right across the channel about 50 metres behind the ship.

The fortress was in the past considered impregnable. On many occasions, the Electors of Trier, in times of war, brought the "holy Robe" here for safe keeping.

We stayed overnight at Koblenz and had about an hour to look around Koblenz in the morning. We found that there was a chair lift up to the castle courtyard and despite a few misgvings about her condition, Sue agreed to go up. This shows the view from about half way up.

The Rhine is still very much a working waterway, there being a multitude of bares of various sizes. This one is quite large and was travelling upstream. Taken from the fortress courtyard.

From earliest times, Koblenz has been of great military importance. In 9 BC a Roman castle was built, round which developed the floutishing Roman town of Confuentes. For a time in the middle ages, the town was the residential seat of the Electors of Trier, and was greatly enlarged. When it became Prussion, in 1815, it was strongly fortified and ranked as a very important garrison town.
