Chartres
Chartres Cathedral at Night
27-Oct-1974
The first day of our holiday in Prance. We had a gruelling six hour coach journey from Calais to Chartes, much of it in darkness thanks to a mistake in times which caused three members of the Party to miss the boat train. Our first view of Chartres came from several miles away when the magnificent cathedral came into view on the horizon. The cathedral is built on the highest piece of land in the town and is floodlit at night. After arrival at Chartres and eating our dinner at 10 p.m. we managed a short walk in the rain to look at this beautiful building from close up. This photo, which was bought shows a view of the cathedral at night.

Rambouillet Castle
The Castle Grounds
28-Oct-1974
Rambouillet castle is now the official residence of the president of the french Republic in the summer. It dates fron the 14th century although now only one tower remains of that building. The rest of the present castle dates fron the l6th and 18th Century. The castle was given to the state by Napolean III. The castle is set in large grounds; this photo shows some of the trees at the top of the grounds. As can be seen the weather was very good for late October, predominantly sunny with slight cloud. Chartres: Place de la Cathedrale
A Crocodile
28-Oct-1974
A group of kindergarten children were being "moved" past the cathedral. They are all holding onto a rope which is held at each end by their supervisors. Chartres: The town of Chartres is 50 miles South West of Paris and has a population or 54500. It stands on the river Eure and is the capitol of the department of Eure-et-Loir. It is the trade centre of the region of Beuce, an agricultural region where grain is grown and cattle are raised. Industries include brewing and distilling, leather tanning and the manufacture of agricultural machinery. It is most famous however for its Cathedral which is considered to be among the finest examples of the gothic style of architecture.

Chartres Cathedral
28-Oct-1974
Front of Cathedral from the Place de la Cathedral. Straight on view shows clearly the two different towers; the older ornate one on the left and the newer plain one on the right. Chartres cathedral is probably the finest example in the world of the Gothic style of architecture. It was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. The two towers date from different times, the ornate one dates from the 13th century and is 375 feet high. The plain one is a later addition (c. 16th century) and is slightly smaller (350 feet). The stained glass dates from the 13th century and contains beautiful colours. The main doorway is decorated with stone sculptures.
