Chartres Cathedral
Chartres cathedral is probably the finest example in the world of the Gothic style of architecture. It was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. The two towers date from different times, the ornate one dates from the 13th century and is 375 feet high. The plain one is a later addition (c. 16th century) and is slightly smaller (350 feet).
The beautifully coloured stained glass dates from the 13th century. The main doorway is decorated with stone sculptures.

Chartres Chartres Cathedral 28-Oct-1974 As in most major cathedrals the main altar and choir is surrounded by an enclosing wall to form an 'Apse'. This wall is intricately carved and this photo shows a detail of this carving.

Chateaudun The Chateau of Chateaudun 28-Oct-1974 Chateaudun was a small town where we stopped for a break during our journey from Chartres to Blois. It is situated on the River Loir (without the e). The castle is situated on the top of the valley side with steep slopes on three sides.
The chateau of Chateaudun is famous because it is one of the oldest, parts dating from the 9th century and geographically it is the first of the chateaux country on the road from Paris.

Blois Sue 28-Oct-1974 Sue at the top of a flight of stairs by the chateau in Blois. Behind is a tree eith the brown leaves of autumn. We arrived in Blois fkom Chartres in the late evening and went for a walk to explore the town after dinner. We were to spend two nights in Blois.
Blois is a medium sized town situated on the Loire about 150 miles South West of Paris. It is famous for its chateau and its modern Basilica. Its main industry is agriculture, but it is also noted for its chocolate factory. The town is in two parts - on one side of the river the land is flat and the old town is built. On the other side the 'new' town is built around the chateau on the valley side.

Sue and a friend we met on the holiday, Jeanette Fitzpatrick (and husband Robert, not seen in this photo) from New Zealand and Didsbury look shattered as they reach the top of the flight of steps.
