The City of Krakow became the capital of the Polish kings in 1320. It was suceeded as capital by Warsaw in 1601) but continued to serve as the coronation city for Poland's monarchs. Krakow came under Austrian rule in 1795 and then in 1815 to 1846 it and its environs were an independant republic. In 1846 it reverted to Austrian control until 1918 when it was incorporated into the newly established Polish state.
