Kamakura - Hase Sue standing in front of the great Buddha in Kamakura 10-Aug-1997 Out first full day in Japan and we headed for the town of Kamakura, about 30 minutes away from Yokohama by train. An ancient capital of Japan, Kamakura is famous for its many temples and especially for its enormous Buddha. The building that surrounded the statue was destroyed by a tidal wave many centuries ago. Buddha now stands serenely in the open air.

Kamakura - Hase Sue looking at a map of Kamakura while we stopped for a drink 10-Aug-1997 Although the breeze meant that conditions on this first day were tolerable and certainly much cooler than subsequent days, it was still sunny and hot. The meant that we looked for shade wherever possible and took every opportunity to stop for a drink. This time we were drinking the local Coke-light. It is much sweeter than British Diet-Coke and probably contains suger, so we kept away from it most of the time and kept bottles of water with us.
