Hakone-Tozan line train at Gora

As planned on our Wedding anniversary we set off for the Hakone region. Up at 7am, we were breakfasted and checked out of the hotel by ten past eight. We walked to Akasaka-Mitsuke subway station and took the Marunouchi Line four stops to Tokyo station, in plenty of time for our Shinkansen, Kodama-411 to Odawara. At Odawara, we quickly discovered the Hakone-Freedom card, which for a fixed price allowed us unlimited use of the trains, boats and aerial ropeway. We took a small train up the Hakone-Tozan line as far as Gora. This was a fascinating ride. The first section was dual-gauge, to allow Odakyu Line express trains from Shinjuku to reach Hakone-Yumoto. From their on, the smaller but broader gauge trains of the Tozan line negitiated the sharp curves and steep climbs, reversing three times to gain height.

From Gora, a funiculaire climbs to Sounzan, one terminus of the Hakone ropeway. That wasn't appropriate with a fairly large bag, so we looked for a bus. This proved to be rather more difficult than we expected, involving a change at Sengoku and finally arriving at Togendai.
