Up at 7am, we were breakfasted and checked out of the hotel by ten past eight. We walked to Akasaka-Mitsuke subway station and took the Marunouchi Line four stops to Tokyo station, in plenty of time for our Shinkansen, Kodama-411 to Odawara. At Odawara, we quickly discovered the Hakone-Freedom card, which for a fixed price allowed us unlimited use of the trains, boats and aerial ropeway. We took a small train up the Hakone-Tozan line as far as Gora. This was a fascinating ride. The first section was dual-gauge, to allow Odakyu Line express trains from Shinjuku to reach Hakone-Yumoto. From their on, the smaller but broader gauge trains of the Tozan line negitiated the sharp curves and steep climbs, reversing three times to gain height. 0897-2680 .jpg Gora Sue waiting for the bus onwards from Gora 19-Aug-1997 From Gora, a funiculaire climbs to Sounzan, one terminus of the Hakone ropeway. That wasn't appropriate with a fairly large bag, so we looked for a bus.
