Rhine
The Lorelei
28-Sep-1976
From certain angles, the Lorelei now looks quite innocuous. In past times it was quite diferent. Before the road was built, the rock was sheer down to the water level and the river itself is very deep and fast moving at this point.
Any boat losing power anywhere within 20 miles upstream of the Lorelei would end up on the rocks.
Because it was not possible to travel upstream by boat, we travelled to Bingen and Rudesheim by bus. This photo was taken at a point where we stopped on the way upstream. We continued upstream to Bingen and crossed by ferry to Rudesheim or a packed lunch.
After lunch we took a tour of the Asback Uralt brandy distillery.
