Our holiday was a six day cruise on the Rhine with European Yacht Cruises, a small company owning just one boat, the MV Roland. We drove up to London very early in the morning and with no traffic got there very much too early. The place where we were to assemble was simply a car park with no facilities, so we had to get a taxi just to get a cup of coffee. The only public loo was locked, and people got increasingly desperate as time went on. Almost all of the rest of the people on the holiday were rather older than we were. We had a rather sleepy journey to Dover, stopping on the motorway for a break. The channel crossing was painless, embarking and disembarking in the coach. The weather was misty, so the four hour crossing to Zebrugge dragged somewhat. The coach journey through the drizzle to Cologne took five and a half hours, mostly in the dark. We went through across the North of Belgium and just cut across the Netherlands. When we arrived, the boat was somewhat less than inspiring. Our cabin was minute and the sanitary arrangements were pretty primitive. Things looked better when we had eaten. Throughout the holiday, thye food was excellent, which made up for the quality of the boat.
