23-Oct-2001 14:16 - Amsterdam - James de Raeve - James de Raeve (The Open Group) summarized the Testing and Certification side of The Open Group's business:

Why Standards are useful - historically and up to the present day
Standards-based trade - what it leads to, so that test results are fair, repeatable, and usable.
Success in the marketplace - what this means
Barriers we have to overcome to ensure successful delivery of our test and certification business
July's breaking news for this business - the Open Services Gateway initiative (OSGi)
Purpose of a Certification Policy - including the value of using trademarks, testing to verify conformance, subsequent re-testing to assure continued conformance, handling of non-conformance problem reports through a timely resolution process, and our appeals process to resolve disputes. He noted that confidentiality is also important until the certifier is ready to go public.
James concluded that The Open Group has demonstrated a proven business in delivering high quality test and certification services to a number of business areas, some deriving from Open Group standards, and others from contracts with other standards organizations and consortia, all to the benefit of the purchasers of information systems products.

23-Oct-2001 14:35 - Amsterdam - John Spencer - Key messages were that the Architecture forum has been in existence since 1994. TOGAF is a generic framework to enable generation of a range of architectures for computing environments. It has evolved through members contributions over the years since 1994. New features in the latest revision of The Open Group's Architecture Framework standard (TOGAFv7) are:

Inclusion of ANSI/IEEE 1471-2000
Architecture compliance reviews
Architecture patterns
Architecture principles
Business Executive's Guide to IT Architecture
Business scenarios
Model based representations of TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM)
Tailoring of the ADM
TOGAF comparisons with other frameworks
TOGAF in the enterprise
Potential work items in 2002 include:

a proposal to develop an Architect Certification scheme that will be of interest to those who wish to demonstrate they have achieved professional competence in use of TOGAF methodology
migration of TOGAF to other areas.

23-Oct-2001 14:50 - Amsterdam - Gregory Gorman - The MMF's prime goals are aimed at accelerating deployment of wireless applications and devices into enterprise environments. It organized a major event in Japan in the past quarter, which attracted a high level of attendance and interest. The MMF is planning to hold further vertical industry workshops in the USA and Europe in 2002, targeted on validating our focus on specific development work areas for mobile computing. Papers produced in recent months include on session management, data synchronization, and security (AAA). They are also partnering with the Directory Interoperabiulity Forum on developing a business scenarion for the

23-Oct-2001 14:50 - Amsterdam - Gregory Gorman - Gregory Gorman continued with a more in-depth report on session management. The business rationale for session management is management and support of mobile workers - and we have to assume here that there will be problems in continuity of connectivity as mobile workers move from one connection environment to another. Voice in this situation is not a problem because connectivity can be re-established and the conversation then resumed easily from where the participants left off. However interruption of data downloads do represent a serious problem for ensuring data transfer is resumed from where it was interrupted - starting from the beginning again is not an acceptable solution. The goals of session management are to solve the problem that the different types of networks (PAN, WAN, LAN, Bluetooth) currently do not interoperate to allow seamless transitions between each other. Many components are involved. The MMF has constructed an architecture to embrace all these components and position them so they can be coherently addressed.

Other areas being addressed are to define security requirements for Authentication, Authorization & Accounting (AAA), and also Directory related issues. Overall, the MMF members are continuing to evangelise their architectural approach to addressing the problems in the mobile computing space.

23-Oct-2001 15:11 - Amsterdam - Dean Sepstrup - Dean Sepstrup (Boeing) then gave a presentation on progress over the past quarter on the Secure Messaging Challenge. He first explained the EMA's view that challenges benefit everyone, and their belief has been proven through responses to their 3 previous challenges, which he outlined.

He went on to explain how Boeing brought this 4th

23-Oct-2001 15:12 - Amsterdam - Dean Sepstrup - Dean listed Boeing's partner requirements for allowing interested parties to participate in this EMA challenge. This list allows for various levels of involvement. He then presented several slides describing the scope of the problem space they have already defined, the approach they have used, the architecture and components involved, their plans for testing and validation, and the expected demonstration and deliverables and reports that they plan to present at the next Open Group Conference in Anaheim. Dean closed by inviting anyone interested in participating at any level, to contact him or any other project member.

23-Oct-2001 16:15 - Amsterdam - Elaine Babcock - Elaine Babcock gave a brief report from the last Board of Directors meeting (July 2001). The highlights were that The Open Group's finances are satisfactory, thought the economic downturn in our industry has resulted in less growth in membership through 2001 than was planned at the start of 2001. The Forums work is going well. The July dot.com program (copy available on the Amsterdam conference pack CD) was a success, and we are looking forward to further success delivering the remaining planned deliverables for 2001. Conference attendances are considered good, and the feeling of the Board is that this is also true for this Amsterdam meeting given the current economy and recent tragic terrorist events on 11 September in NewYork and Washington.

23-Oct-2001 16:19 - Amsterdam - Skip Slone - The next steps are that the DIF needs to discuss this requirement with suppliers of directory solutions, and persuade them to commit to developing solutions. In this activity, we need customers who need solutions to this requirement to contribute:

by raising visibility in the marketplace of the importance of this requirement
by engaging in discussions with interested suppliers over deployment of their proposed solutions
by supporting the Customer Council activity to monitor and press for progress on delivering acceptable solutions.
