Northstar-at-Tahoe
Saturday 25 January 1992

Weather

Very similar to previous day. Some forecast rain/snow failed to materialise.

Overall

Another excellent day of skiing at the Northstar-at-Tahoe resort. This was Chris and Jenny's second day and we were joined by a group of work colleagues, Andrew Walker, James de Raeve, Roy McKean and Pete Smith.

For most of the day Chris and Jenny went off on their own trying to ski every run on the mountain.

The entrance

Early in the day Chris and Jenny are getting off the Comstock Express lift at the Summit ready to ski down the long West Ridge run.

The view from the Summit of Mount Pluto is magnificent in all directions. This shot South just about show Lake Tahoe.

Early in the day, the complete group heads off down the West Ridge. Left to right: James de Raeve, Roy McKean, Andrew Walker, Jenny and crouching down, Chris. It looks as if Jenny is holding a drinks can in her hand. In fact the yellow object is a waste bin in the background.

The main run down from the West Ridge to the resort center is the groomed intermediate Luggi's. Chris in the distance skis down towards the bottom of that run.

Looking down the black Iron Horse run. This really doesn't give any impression of the length or steepness of the run.

Burn Out, a long steepish groomed run was the highlight of the day. Gradually, we all got faster as we skied down. Jenny and Chris were skiing almost the whole run pointed straight down hill with a minimum or turns. Others tried to follow with spectacular results. James de Raeve in particular had a massive crash into the trees but luckily was unhurt.

And again.

And then near the bottom.

Roy McKean near the bottom.

A well deserved lunch. Chris looks rather tousled and Jenny looks very cool.

The advanced runs at Northstar are on the "backside" served by the Shaeffer Camp lift, at that time a slow triple chair, which climbs over a long mogul run, Cascades. We kept well clear for most of the day until Jenny dropped her hat, which meant that Chris and Jenny had to ski the moguls until they reached the hat and could cut across through the trees onto Burn Out.

Jenny had a number of spectacular crashes. One of which resulted in her being wrapped around a tree!

We didn't see much of Pete Smith during the day. While the rest of us were taking a gentle warm up, Pete disappeared down a steep black run. It turned out that his legs weren't quite up to it. By the end of the day however, when it was time for an apres ski drink, Pete re-emerged!

The end of the day and that wonderful feeling when feet get released from boots. James de Raeve and Roy McKean savour that moment before putting shoes back on.
