The main square is in the old town of Krakow. It is about 200 metres square, with the historic "Cloth Hall" in the centre. This view is towards the church of St. Mary, with the statue of the poet Adam Mickiewicz to the left. (He is buried in the castle-cathedral at Krakow). Krakow Krakow is the third largest city in Poland, behind Warsaw and lodz, with a population of 535400 (est. 1967). As the country's cultural centre, the city is the site of many universities, colleges, museums, theatres etc.. It is also an inportant rail junction and an industrial city. It is one of the largest iron and steel manufacturing centres in central Europe; these industries being sited in the Nowa Huta district of the town; once an independant suburb. The city of Krakdw was founded in about the yaer 700, and is one of the oldest cities in Central Europe. Among the historic buildings in the city are the castle, which was first started in the 12th century and the cathedral, which dates from the 14th century. It also boasts Poland's oldest university, the Jagellonian University, which was founded in 1364.
