Warsaw
The Grand Theatre of Opera and Ballet from Plac Zwiecestwa
17-May-1975
The Grand Theatre of Opera & Ballet (Teatr Wielki Opery i Baletu) This building was first built in the years 1826 - 1833. It was built in a pseudo-classical style and was decorated with a monumental colonnaded portico crowned with a frieze, representing the return of Oedipus from the Olympic games. The theatre was destroyed during the war, being used for executions during the insurrection. The right wing was restored in 1947-1949 and now houses the national theatre. The remainder of the building was reconstructed between 1953 and 1963 and the auditorium seats 1800.
