Osgród Saski - The tomb of the unknown soldier
17-May-1975
Osgród Saski: This park borders the Plac Zwyciestwa. It represents the remains of the Palace of Saskie which dated from the time of Napoleon. This was destroyed in 1944. The
park was the palace gardens. (Before the war, the square was callec the Plac Saski).
The tomb of the unknown soldier is at the East end of
the park and is built in a fragment of the colonade of
the old Palace which survived the war. There are four urns,
each containing the remains of six unidentified soldiers,
representing the campaigns in which Polish troops fell
in the war:
- Warsaw
- Forest of Janaw
- Tobruk
- Lenino
- Monte Casino
- Westerplatte.
There is an eternal flame and a continuous guard which
is ceremonially changed each Sunday at noon.
