Day 17 - Turtle Bay

Last full day in Turtle Bay. I booked up for a snorkeling trip from a glass bottomed-boat (above) and Sue relaxed by the pool for the morning.
The ocean view block of the hotel in the sun around breakfast time.

The seaweed at the high water mark shows just how close the Spring Tides came to the curio shops on the beach.

Watamu Marine Reserve is reputed to be one of the best spots for snorkeling anywhere on the Kenyan coast. At some times of the year it is possible to walk out to the reef at low tide. In August, the seaweed blowing on shore gets in the way.

I almost missed the snorkeling but finally bought a ticket from someone on the beach on Thursday afternoon. The glass bottomed boat arrived at 9:30 am and travelled South for about 30 minutes to join a number of other boats moored around the edge of the reef.

We stayed for about an hour. There was not the variety of fish that we saw in Hawaii and Barbados, but the trip was well worth the time and money.

The boat was not in very good condition with a rather smelly engine, so Sue was well advised to stay back at the hotel.

Low tide gave us the opportunity for another walk around the rocks.

We were tempted to take another game drive, this time into the Tsavo National Park. The one day Kuoni trip was not sufficiently well supported and didn't happen.

The hotel arranged trip involved an overnight stay in a tent (like this one on show in the hotel groups). We decided that we didn't need another 2 day trip.

Two more pictures taken around the hotel shows coconuts waiting to fall and a tropical plant just outside our room.
