Second Temple Model

According to the Lonely Planet guide:

"In the grounds of the Holy Land Hotel is a huge 1:50 scale model of Jerusalem as it was in 66AD, at the end of the Second Temple era. While the model is fantastic and the attention to detail incredible, it's a long way out of town and only those with a keen interest in Jewish history or archeology are going to find the trip worthwhile."

Hermann had other ideas. His view is that an overall view of what Jerusalem used to be like is important to put the individual places we would visit into context.

He proceeded to show us the model from every possible angle and the explain every detail - a little bit too much in the sun, with virtually no shade.

The major feature of the model is the temple itself. The temple itself has been destroyed, but much of the inner wall surrounding Temple Mount still remains. The facing wall in the bottom picture is the Wailing Wall.

Fragments of the second wall have recently been excavated (see Jerusalem by night).

This view of the Southern wall of Temple Mount shows the entrance to the money-changing area, steps near the current path up to Temple Mount and a half arch across an old waterway, now underground.

The picture on the right shows the old Roman stadium.

These pictures show ordinary houses to the West of the Temple.

Information for building the model came from the extensive writings of the historian Josephus. Jerusalem as depicted was destroyed about AD70.

Herod's Palace was built at the Northern end of the Temple area.
This model shows the tombs in the Valley of Jehoshaphat (part of the Kidron Valley), including
  • Tomb of Jehoshaphat
  • Absalom's Pillar
  • Grotto of St. James
  • Tomb of Zechariah

This area just outside the old walls is a possible site of Golgotha, and is now the site of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
This picture shows the extensive buildings North and West of the Old City wall.

This part is separate from the main model and I didn't actually find out what it is.
These photos show the area around the model, a modern residential suburb of Jerusalem. In the valley below is a shopping centre and the National Football Stadium.
